Plant Echoes and Conjured Sounds

These paintings are reflections on time spent in nature. All the pigments used come from natural botanical and mineral sources, and they convey the connections formed between various plants, the patterns that occur in the wild, and the memories that nature leaves behind in our minds. Stitching fabric and canvas together comes both out of necessity and as a way to explore different visual structures. With these paintings I am demonstrating the value of working with the land, and creating within a circular economy.

A note from the curator:

Take a minute with these canvases…actually give them space to settle in your head. These are slow, contemplative artworks created out of a labour of love. Nicole creates her own pigments and dyes out of natural plants and minerals, then stitches canvas together in a wonderful collage. With Nicole’s focus on creating a dialogue about waste-free practices, this work is as important as it is aesthetically pleasing.
